What is the 4-4-2 formation?
4-4-2 is classic — two up front, but often outnumbered in midfield.
The 4-4-2 provides two strikers for partnership play and a flat four across midfield. It can lack a central midfield extra against 4-3-3 or 3-5-2. Modern variants use a diamond midfield or one striker dropping to compete. It remains effective for direct, counter-attacking football.
