How do penalty shootouts work?
Penalty shootouts are nerve games — five each, then sudden death.
Shootouts use five rounds of alternating penalties, then sudden death if still tied. Only players on the pitch at full-time (plus subs) can take kicks. The coin toss decides who shoots first — statistically a slight advantage. Goalkeepers and psychology play huge roles.
