What is a false nine?
A false nine drops deep to pull defenders out of shape.
The operates between the lines, withdrawing from the central striker role to link play. Centre-backs face a dilemma: follow and leave space behind, or hold position and give the player time on the ball. Messi under Guardiola popularised the role, but the concept dates back further.
